Square alternative

Square Online is cheap. Here's where it isn't.

We'll say it plainly: if you run one restaurant in the US and you're already on Square's POS, Square Online is very hard to beat and you probably shouldn't switch. This page is about the two situations where that stops being true — more than one location, and anywhere Square doesn't operate.

Being fair about it

When Square is the better buy

You're already on Square

If your tills, your card reader and your reporting are already Square, adding Square Online means one system, one settlement and one support line. That integration is worth real money and we can't match it. Bolting a separate ordering platform onto a Square POS is a worse setup than using theirs, unless one of the reasons below applies to you.

You want hardware from the same place

Square sells readers, terminals and stands starting around $59, on the same account as the software. Ontabee is software only — you bring your own gateway and your own hardware. If you're opening from nothing and want one supplier, that's a genuine advantage.

Where we're different

Three reasons restaurants leave anyway

Square isn't in your country

The UAE, the wider Gulf and India are not on Square's list. This is the single most common reason restaurants in our markets need something else — it isn't a preference, there's simply no product to buy.

Your processing rate is locked

On Square you pay Square's rate. With your own gateway you pay whatever you negotiated, and you keep it if you move platforms. On the Free plan Square's online rate is 3.3% + 30¢ — on $10,000 a month that's $330 before the fixed fees.

Per-location pricing compounds

Every new site adds another $49 or $149. Flat pricing means opening your fifth location changes your bill by nothing. Worth modelling before you sign, not after.

Questions

Commonly asked

How much does Square Online cost for a restaurant?

Square publishes three plans, priced per location: Free at $0/month, Plus at $49/month and Premium at $149/month. Online card processing is 3.3% + 30¢ on the Free plan and 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus and Premium. Square takes no commission on direct online orders. Verified August 2026.

Is Square online ordering really free?

The plan genuinely is $0 with no commission on direct orders. The cost sits in processing: 3.3% + 30¢ per online transaction on the Free plan, which is higher than the paid tiers and higher than many independently negotiated gateway rates. On $10,000 of monthly online orders that difference is worth a few hundred dollars a month.

Is Square available in the UAE or India?

No. Square states that card payment acceptance is available in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and Spain. Restaurants in the UAE, wider Gulf and India cannot use it, which is the main reason they end up looking for an alternative.

What is a good Square alternative for multiple locations?

Square prices per location, so five locations on Plus is $245/month. Ontabee is a flat $99/month for 2–9 locations regardless of count, and lets you keep your own payment gateway and negotiated rate. For a single US location already running Square POS, Square Online is hard to beat on price.
